Giffels provided consulting engineering services for the conceptual design and preliminary engineering of a Runway Guard Lighting (RGL) system to be installed on all runways at Sydney Kingsford Airport. Air Services Australia (ASA) recently mandated major airports in Australia to replace their current runway intersection visual aids with the ICAO standard Guard Lights. The project includes new RGL fixtures at each runway intersection, with new power regulators installed in each of the 6 Lighting Electrical Rooms.

The present airfield lighting control system has reached the maximum capacity of it’s control. As part of the design, Giffels recommended a separate control system architecture be established and designed to accommodate the existing lighting systems. A new graphic based touch screen interface was introduced to the control tower, initially to control only the RGL system , but eventually to serve as the entire lighting control panel.
