Cambridge & North Dumfries Hydro (C&ND) retained Giffels to provide engineering and construction administration services to add four - 27.6 kV feeders into the original transformer station, to meet the high energy demand in the area.

Giffels also provided the detailed design for the addition of 20MVAR, 29kV shunt capacitor bank for C&ND. The utilities existing 230kV-27.6kV, 50/67/83MVA transformer station was originally designed by Giffels in 2002. The transformer station was designed to accommodate a future shunt capacitor bank with provisions for the addition of an outdoor shunt capacitor bank, capacitor bank circuit breaker and associated protection, control and monitoring. As such, work was carried out without service interruption.

The work was completed ahead of schedule and within budget. The plan for additional future expansions is still in place and can similarly occur with little or no renovation or demolition.
