On behalf of the Region of York and the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, Giffels conducted a Schedule “C” Class Environmental Assessment for a proposed water system to serve 2,500 people in these two communities. Many wells had become contaminated by road salt and septic system effluent. The recommended alternative consisted of two new wells, a 20 km. water distribution system, 850 service connections and an elevated storage reservoir with the capacity of 2,300 cubic metres.
A preliminary design report was prepared as the next stage of the work. This report included a water network analysis. Giffels also designed, administered contracts for construction and completed the commissioning of a water pumping facility with two 30 L/s well pumps and chlorination equipment. Variable speed controllers were installed to optimize pump operation and control water pressure, as the system was initially commissioned without the proposed elevated tank. A 150 kw standby diesel generator automatically maintains power during hydro failure.
