Giffels designed the processes, selected the equipment and prepared the general layout of the wastewater treatment facility. The manufacturing complex includes both a vehicle assembly plant and an engine manufacturing plant. The wastewater treatment system will pre-treat all process wastewater before it is discharged to the publicly-owned treatment works.
The initial wastewater treatment facility has a design capacity of 205,000 gallons per day (9 L/s) with a provision for a 100% increase in capacity. The batch treatment works comprise three separate processes for metals-bearing wastewater, oily wastewater and spent machining coolants respectively. The wastewater treatment process consists of equalization/holding, chemical addition, mixing and settling. Sludges produced are compacted and dried for off-site disposal. Spent machining coolants are accumulated, concentrated in an ultrafilter process and disposed of through an oil recycling contractor. Permeate from the ultrafilter is discharged to the oily wastewater treatment process.
In 2003, Giffels was retained to conduct a modification that included P&ID drawing update and a sludge study as a result of newly added plant capacity.
