After a competitive selection process, Giffels was selected as the preferred team for the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women. Phase 1 is to design and construct a 104 cell facility. The project which is targeted for LEED® Gold certification will be flexible and easily adaptable to the changing inmate demographics and population. The project is broken into four living unit pods in a circular mode, with services and activity areas, less living unit officer supervision, shorter corridors, large amounts of natural light and fresh air and decentralized programmes Giffels design follows the guidelines of ‘BC Generation 3 Design Principles and BC’s Enhanced Direct Supervision Staffing Model’ for correctional facilities. The intent of the guidelines are to create smaller, campus like spaces providing a better and healthier environment for the women to live and be rehabilitated to reintegrate into society.
