Giffels was retained to design, construct and commission a new college building in an existing warehouse building, formerly owned by the Department of National Defence. The project promotes an energy efficient, environmentally sustainable design with natural lighting and state-of-the-art facilities and systems for programs such as autobody, welding, carpentry, culinary arts and drafting. The existing building required minor interior and exterior demolition to accommodate the new design, and also required careful removal of materials containing asbestos. A full height main entrance provides a gathering and meeting place for students. Skylights along this corridor allow natural light to flood the massive space. The project also involved the construction of a new road leading to the facility, as well as the transportation and installation of existing equipment from the University of Fraser Valley’s Abbotsford campus to the Chilliwack campus site.
