Giffels was engaged by the Liquor Control Board Ontario (LCBO) to be the project managers and the design engineers on the materials handling systems for this central distribution facility for wine, spirits and imported beer. The facility was designed for a projected volume of 15 million cases in 1990 with growth to 22 million by the year 2000.
Up-front planning resulted in extensive capital cost savings, it also provided simplified integration of multiple systems into a smooth functioning facility. Cases are unloaded from trucks to the automated receiving and retrieval conveyor system. Palletized cases are spray coded before storage in the computerized inventory warehouse. Full pallets of a brand, or pallets made up of a variety of products may be shipped. Retrieval of pallets from the high rise storage system are transferred by seven storage cranes, either to locations adjacent to
a tunnel picking area within the racks, or to the output accumulation conveyors at the head of the aisles. To meet the daily needs of all LCBO stores and The Beer Stores serviced from Durham, an extensive order and tier picking system transports store orders to the proper consolidation areas. |
