GO Transit’s plans for expansion of their service to Bradford, Ontario required the expansion of their Bradford Layover Facility to accommodate additional train storage capacity. This involved both an expansion of the existing facility and development of an alternate facility to service the line.

Beginning in 2001, Giffels first undertook a study to determine the storage options available. A limitation to storage capacity was the availability of electrical power. Giffels confirmed that there was adequate power by adding cooling fans to an existing transformer to increase its output - this avoided replacing the transformer. Electrical modifications included new switchgear breakers, changes to existing DC controls and undervoltage protection. Giffels determined that the best option would be to provide storage capacity for 3 train consists of 10 cars each. This involved modifying two existing sidings and providing a new spur siding with additional conduit banks, wayside power cabinets, new switch and track, and the extension of existing track area lighting.

The project involved coordination with GO personnel, site visits and design reviews at the concept, 30% and 60% stages of the project.
